Trends for the year 2008

Pluto has moved into Capricorn

In November of 2008 Pluto, the great Transformer, moved into Capricorn, sign of government, big business and professionalism.  Pluto will be in this sign for 17 years, until 2024.

As the Transformer, Pluto stimulates metamorphosis in any area it travels through, promoting profound change through a death-and-rebirth process.  The sign of Capricorn represents the archetype of the father and deals with themes of structure, order, goal-setting, ambition, politics, business, professionalism, duty and status.  Pluto will be acting through those themes and in those areas.  Capricorns, prepare for serious metamorphosis!

While Pluto is in Capricorn, people in power will undergo transformation and the very nature of power itself may change.  We will have cause to ask ourselves:  “What is power, really?  Do our political servants serve us or themselves?”  Big businesses will have to become more selfless and to take greater responsibility for the effects of their business practices—or face death if they will not change.  Corruption will be exposed.

These concerns exist not only in the world, but also inside each human being. Ask yourself:

  • Do the structures in my life serve or demand?
  • Am I taking advantage of my social position to use others, or do I occupy my position for the good of all?
  • Who else besides me will benefit from my achievement of my goals?
  • Am I ready for a metamorphosis of my career?

Saturn is now in Virgo

Saturn moved into Virgo in September of 2007 and will be there until late 2009. Saturn is comfortable in Virgo because both Saturn and Virgo are earthy, so they have much in common. Saturn’s agenda is one of professionalization and ambition. Placed in Virgo, Saturn brings discipline and order to the Virgo areas of life, which are personal organization, work, health and service.

Saturn in Virgo asks:

  • In what ways could your daily routines be better organized? Could your calendar be more effective? Are there better ways to use it?
  • What are your goals for your health? Do you need a new health regime? Could you use more effective vitamins, workout or eating habits?
  • What do you want to contribute to the world that’s real and useful? Are you truly serving at work and does your work serve some vital part of you as well?

If you turn 29 in 2008 or 2009, then your Saturn Return is likely in progress.  You are getting in touch with the deeper meaning of your career and may attain an ambition beyond what you’ve known before.  This is a year for accomplishing concrete, doable goals in practical, predictable ways.  It’s time for you to get truly organized and to become more effective at what you do.   The hard work you do now will yield rewards in the next 29 years.

Jupiter is almost done with Capricorn

Jupiter made the shift into Capricorn in mid-December of 2007 and will be there through year-end. This is fairly typical for Jupiter, which spends about a year in each sign.

Jupiter’s theme is expansion in all its forms:  joy, fun, growth, education, and anything that expands your mind and develops your philosophy or worldview.  Jupiter is also theatrical and expressive.  Jupiter in Capricorn is a contradiction in terms, because the nature of Jupiter is expansive, while the nature of Capricorn is contractive.  2008 has been a year of taking pleasure in work, of expanding into the limitations we face and feeling invigorated rather than oppressed by them.

Individuals with Jupiter in Capricorn tend to be more comfortable with limitations and even feel strangely enlivened by conditions others find painfully ascetic.  For these people, hard work with a clear reward is satisfying in itself, ambition induces pleasure, and discipline is an appealing form of growth.  If in 2008 you are turning 12, 24, 36, 48 or any age that is a multiple of 12, this means you!  For such individuals, 2008 has held great rewards for work done in the last 12 years.

In 2009, Jupiter moves into Aquarius—so take advantage of Jupiter’s boost to your career while this Jolly Giant is still in Capricorn.  More to come on Jupiter’s Aquarian themes in January.

Saturn opposes Uranus in late ‘08

In November of 2008, Saturn (still in Virgo) phased into opposition with Uranus (in Pisces).  Saturn is known for his conservatism while Uranus is known for being revolutionary.  This Saturn-opposed-Uranus dance will continue, with varying degrees of intensity, until August 2010, when both planets sweep into their next signs.  What does it mean?  See a bit more about it here.
